The Erasmusrand Pedestrian Bridge next to the Solomon Mahlangu Drive Bridge over the N1 at Hoërskool Waterkloof has been damaged beyond repair. The Erasmusrand Pedestrian Bridge must be demolished to make way for the construction of a new bridge.
Demolition Time:
Saturday 21 May 2016, from 21h00 to Sunday 22 May, 07h00
(Road will be totally closed from Rigel Avenue to the R21)
Cleaning of the site:
Sunday 22 May, from 07h00 to 09h00

The demolition of the bridge is planned to take place on Saturday evening 21 May 2016 from 21h00 and will continue to Sunday morning 22 May 2016 until 09h00. The demolition will be carried out during these hours in an effort to cause the least disruption to traffic using the N1. On Saturday 21 May 2016, two lanes in both directions under the bridge will be closed from 21h00 to 23h00 to allow time for establishment of the cranes. The freeway will then be TOTALLY CLOSED from Rigel Avenue to the R21 Interchange from 23h00 on Saturday night to 07h00 on Sunday morning to allow for the demolition of the bridge.
Partial opening of lanes under the bridge will take place from 07h00 to 09h00 on Sunday to allow for the de-establishment of the cranes and cleaning of the site. Traffic will be diverted West onto the R21, East onto Solomon Mahlangu Drive, and North onto the R50 then back onto the freeway at Rigel Avenue. (PTO: See schematic map).
Please note that SANRAL and its team of Engineers have considered all possible alternative methods and are comfortable that the safest and fastest demolition method has been chosen to ensure the least possible disruption to the neighboring suburbs, its residents and road users. The bridge will be demolished using mechanical methods, therefore no explosives will be used. That said, residents are nevertheless requested to please be tolerant as some inevitable noise may be experienced during the night.
